Courses are selling fast as the start of term approaches for Frome Community Education. In addition to its core programme of Arts & Crafts, Health & Wellbeing, Languages and Culture courses, there are 18 new courses starting from January.
Completely new this term is “Upholstery Design and Make”, an upholstery course aimed at all skill levels. Tutor Angela Lamb will make sure you choose a project to suit your level of ability and teach you how to apply your creative ideas to make a unique piece for your home.
Programme manager Pia McGee said, “We are thrilled to add upholstery to our programme. Classes will be available in five-week blocks with the option of both morning and afternoon classes – so if you want to progress your project quickly, you will have the ability to do so. This is the first time Frome CommEd has ever offered upholstery, and we expect spaces to fill extremely quickly. If you are interested in having a go, book now!”
Also new to the Arts & Crafts programme are courses in eco sculpture and creative sketchbooking, both taught by local artist and sculptor Fiona Campbell.
If you are looking to gently improve your fitness in the New Year, Frome Community Education is offering a new exercise class “Body Balanced” with Samuel Grove. Sam specialises in physical rehabilitation and recovery, and this class is suitable for all levels of ability.
Focusing on strength work, stretching and core training, it will compliment any existing fitness routine, but will also benefit anyone new to exercise, with poor fitness, or who is experiencing muscle or back pain, poor posture or flexibility. Sam will tailor exercises to suit individual’s limitations to make sure everyone gets the most out of this class.
If you would rather exercise your brain, than your body, then Frome CommEd have no shortage of courses to stimulate the little grey cells from a more comfortable seated position! Roz Sunley returns with a five-week course “Curious Issues in a Confusing World” which encourages a lively discussion of Current Affairs. She has also introduced a new five-week course “Artificial Intelligence – An Introduction For Beginners” to help us all get up to speed on the future applications, limitations, regulation and ethics of AI.
New tutor, Alan Butcher is also offering a whole new perspective on Frome with “The World Beneath Your Feet – Geology Around Frome.” Alan explains, “Frome and its surrounding area are full of geological wonders to explore, and this course aims to explain many of these in the context of everyday life in the town. We will look at historically interesting local people (including William Smith, the Father of English Geology, who made the first geological map of the England and Wales in 1815), as well as important industrial and heritage activities, such as our local Bath stone and Fuller’s Earth quarries.”
